Ethical concerns associated with living donors are as follows; firstly the donor has to volunteer to donate his/her organ with an understanding that there are no monetary gains involved. Secondly, the organ has to be compatible with that of the recipient. Thirdly, the risks and the benefits involved have to be disclosed to both the donor and the recipient. The advantages of the legal mandate to declare one’s choice to organ donation on driver’s licenses are; firstly, the driver’s license is considered a legal document which authorizes donation of the organ and lastly, it shows that the donor gave consent and made this desire known while still alive which means that one has to be contacted upon the donors death about donation CITATION [Cen04]Cen04.
The discrepancy between the number of people who require kidney transplants and available organs is caused by the growing list of patients with renal failure. Each year, patients die while still on waiting list to get a donor for a kidney transplant. An additional number join the waiting list due to the high rate of the obesity whose symptoms include hypertension and diabetes which also cause renal failure CITATION [Lar]Lar.
