To help the patient to effectively cope with the new diagnosis, the registered nurse (RN) should first appraise the personality and baseline coping skills of the patient and undertake an accurate assessment of the patient adaptation (Falcone et al., 2014). Accordingly, this will enable the RN to classify the personality of the patient as either narcissistic or that of suffering victim, discern and categorize the response of the patient to the potentially devastating news, and identify possible maladaptations (Falcone et al., 2014). Through this approach, the RN will be able to gather the cognitive interpretations and emotional reactions of the patient regarding Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus determine his/her strengths and establish how he/she handles stressful situations. Using this information the RN identify a favorable setting in which to converse with, understand and advise the patient so as to ensure acceptance and compliance (Falcone et al., 2014).
The RN should consider such factors as coping skills of the patient, the available support mechanism, emotional response to the illness, the intensity of the exhibited maladaptive behaviors (Falcone et al., 2014). Consideration of these factors will help...
