Effects of Probiotics Supplementation among Children with Cystic Fibrosis
Cystic fibrosis is a hereditary disorder of the exocrine glands wherein there is excessive gland secretions which causes mucus buildup on the pancreas, the intestine and the lungs CITATION Med \l 13321 (Medicine.net.com).
One of the interesting journals I was able to find regarding cystic fibrosis is on the effects of probiotics on the quality of life of children with cystic fibrosis.
One main cause of the inability of coping by patients with cystic fibrosis is the progressive inflammatory lung disease. This may even cause other secondary diseases and even death to these patients. To be able to reduce pulmonary exacerbation, these patients are subjected to antibiotic therapy which causes them to be immunocompromised. Also due to the heavy medication given the patient, intestinal inflammation occurs CITATION alA13 \l 13321 (Al-Jafari, et al., 2013).
To be able to reduce risks caused by medication, probitotics were considered as one supplementation that will help in preventing pulmonary deterioration among patients. A clinical trial was then done among 37 patients with cystic fibrosis aged 2-12 years. Twenty of which took probiotics for a month and 17 took placebo capsules. Results showed that parents reported an improvement in the quality of life among the ones taking the probiotic supplement dring the third month.
