Based on your reading in chapter 60, why do you think the issues presented in this chapter persist in today’s workforce culture?
The nursing shortage is a major concern for the healthcare sector, not only in the U.S. but also globally. In the current COVID-19 pandemic, the healthcare sector was exposed mainly because its supply of nurses could not meet demand. Pictures and videos surfaced online of strained nurses forced to work for more hours than usual to try and contain the pandemic. Again, the nursing shortage issue became a major topic of discussion, and nurses came out of retirement, while others rejoined the workforce to try and help contain the situation. It was evident that the current workforce was not able to handle the pandemic. However, regardless of the strategies to temporarily meet demand, it became clear that the nursing workforce is massively shorthanded and that there is a need to adopt mechanisms to help deal with the shortage. Therefore, provided herein is a discussion of the factors contributing to the persistence of the nursing shortage issue in healthcare today.
One of the major issues contributing to the persistence of the nursing shortage issue is the lack of qualified nursing educators to help churn out qualified nurses. Faculty shortages also happen to influence the number of nurses in the workforce. Aragon et al. (2020) note that “it takes an R.N. to make an R.N.” These words spell out the truth that is often neglected. According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) (2020), more than 80,000 qualified applications were turned down because of a shortage in “faculty, clinical sites, classroom space, clinical preceptors, and budget constraints.” If the same continues to happen, the U.S. healthcar...
