The future of nursing initiative was launched by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) to try and find out solutions to not only the issues that affect the profession but also change the way Americans accessed healthcare. As structured in the initiative the IOM convened a committee of experts to help identify potential solutions that would enable Americans to acquire easy access to medical care, reduced prices and an improvement in the quality of the services provided (FRIEDEN, 2010). The initiative calls on nurses to play even a bigger role in the American healthcare system as it increasingly becomes complex.
Importance
The report is of extreme significance for the nursing profession as they contribute about 3 million members in the healthcare workforce. The selected committee came up with four main messages that concerned the nurses. One was to ensure that during their training they practiced to the best of their ability to be ready for the industry. The second one was to ensure that nurses receive higher education and training via an education system that promotes academic progression. Higher learning and training was to make sure that even in their professions they could increase their knowledge and level of professionalism. It also played a paramount role in the development of the nursing workforce. The third increased the power of the nurses in that it made them full partners with physicians and other medical care professions. The fourth one had to do with the development of better policies and efficient planning to ensure effective data collection methods (FRIEDEN, 2010). These policies would ensure that communication between medical professionals was active. Planning is also important as ‘'failing to plan is planning to fail’'
Role of state-based coalitions
Action coalitions all over the country are dedicated to fully implement the recommendations of the IOM in the future of nursing report. They are made up of various factions in the community including local businesses and local health organizations that are determined to build better, admirable and healthier communities via nursing. The state-based action coalitions have the obligation of ensuring that goals set by the initiative have been reached and if not they should facilitate ways of ensuring that the nurses and other concerned parties are working towards them (Cary PhD MPH RN, 2012). They are also tasked with coming up with new recommendations that may be advantageous towards the course. The coalitions are established to ensure a long-term sustainable change at the state and local level. In some cases, the coalitions are required to provide support to those in the community who cannot afford healthcare services at the local level. They can also engage in charitable organizations that are aimed at accomplishing the IOM’s recommendations. The coalitions were given the roles of coming up with new ideas in their respective states that would bring easier medical services to the community.
