Reflection Essay
The nursing profession is continually evolving to offer better healthcare services. The evolution is increasingly demanding a higher skill set, especially to nurses. Nurses who would like to have a fulfilling career must continually update their knowledge base and experience. Broadening the knowledgebase necessitates advancing academically and earn more relevant academic accolades. My goals will be aligned with IOM’s recommendations on the vision it has for nurses.
First, IOM has recommended that it looks forward to increasing the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree to 80% by 2020. As CITATION Tro15 \l 1033 (Trossman, 2015) noted, ‘health care is increasingly complex, so we need nurses with higher levels of critical thinking and decision-making skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with other health care partners.’ it is therefore imperative for the percentage to nurses with BSNs to be increased to 80%. Thus, my first priority will be to earn a baccalaureate degree to be amongst the 80%. With the rapid changes in the nursing profession, it is likely that the people who will lack baccalaureate degrees will not find work and or their prospects of having a fulfilling career as nurses will be very limited.
