Note: This assignment focuses on interviewing a professional whose primary responsibility is directly related to child or family development (for example, a schoolteacher or school counselor would NOT be appropriate for this interview). Also, your interviewee cannot be a family member or close friend.
(Addresses Course Objectives 1, 2, & 4) For this assignment, the student will use the previously developed and graded set of questions to be asked during an in-depth interview of a professional in the field of child and/or family development.
Interview guidelines:
Interviews may be conducted on site (for this the student must send to the potential interviewee a respectful and professional inquiry about the possibility of an interview) or on the phone. Online asynchronous (e.g. e-mail) or synchronous (e.g. IM or Chat) interviews are not acceptable for this assignment.
The paper should:
List each question with a summary of the professional's answers
Include two or three paragraphs at the end describing what the student learned during the interview
Be 5-7 pages in length
The interviewee must send a brief letter of documentation to your instructor indicating that the interview was conducted over the phone or in-person. This may be sent via e-mail directly by the interviewee from a professional e-mail account (not a hotmail, g-mail, yahoo, or similar public domain - if anyone can sign up for the account, it is not a professional email address) and not forwarded by the student.
NOTE: This assignment will not be accepted for grading without the interviewee verification documentation.
This assignment is due by 11:55 PM EST on Sunday of week 6. As with other written assignments, all work must be in compliance with university academic standards and formatting rules of the American Psychological Association (APA) – 6th Edition.

Interviewer: Welcome Ann Higbee to the interview. I am glad you have made time for this.
Interviewee: Thank you so much. I am delighted to interact with you.
Interviewer: Let's begin by understanding what your job entails.
Interviewee: Well, I have been a clinical psychologist for the last 15 years. I have various duties I am expected to perform. The first one is identifying and diagnosing psychological and emotional issues in clients. We employ three significant approaches to diagnose either existing or potential disorders. These are observation, interviews, and tests. Next, we develop appropriate treatment plans.
Additionally, I collaborate with other healthcare providers to evaluate clients' health conditions and recommend the proper treatment. I am also involved in the formulation of personalized interventions and the management of clients. Further, I participate in clinical training seminars where I equip other professionals in the field. There are still many other duties I perform, but these are the basic ones.
Interviewer: Is your work the same as that of counseling psychologists?
Interviewee: That is a good question. I deal with clients who have significant challenges than what counseling psychologists do.
Interviewer: Now, let's talk about children and families. What are some of the major theories that explain the child development process?
Interviewee: Child development is an exciting phenomenon. Several theories have been proposed to explain how children develop. I will touch on only two for now. The first one is Freud's Psychosexual Developmental Theory. Sigmund Freud proposed that child development takes place in stages and focuses on different pleasure areas of the body. During each phase, the child encounters conflicts that are critical in the cause of development. Freud believed that the failure to advance through a step could lead to fixation at a particular point in development, influencing how children behave in the future. The successful completion of each stage then leads to a healthy adult personality.
Interviewer: What is the significance of this theory in child development?
Interviewee: Freud held that early experiences played a significant role in shaping the development process. Parents need to be careful about what they expose their children below five years, as this will determine their behavior as adults.
Interviewer: Okay, that is an eye-opener. Can we focus on the second theory?
Interviewee: Yes, sure. Bowlby's Attachment Theory holds that early relationships with caregivers significantly influence child development and significantly influence a child's social relationships. The theory demonstrates that children have an innate need for attachment, which assures child care and protection. In this regard, children endeavor to stay closer to caregivers, ensuring that they have a safe environment.
