Intra-Abdominal Abscess
Intra-abdominal abscess (IAA) is a chronic inflammatory disorder. It mainly results from conditions such as abdominal surgery, and, trauma, appendicitis, and other conditions involving abdominal infections. IAA has a mortality rate of between 10 to 40% depending on the underlying condition. Moreover, people with Cohn’s disease diabetes have a higher risk of contracting the disorder. IAA is a leading cause of readmission and increased length of stay in the hospital. Therefore, it is imperative to diagnose and treat IAA early to reduce chances of readmission and length of stay in the hospital.
The abscesses may form within a week or within 2 to 3 weeks after surgery. The clinical symptoms include fever and abdominal pain ranging from mild to severe, localized or generalized paralytic ileus, nausea, vomiting, and weight loss (Hecker et al., 2019).
