According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 1.7 million head concussions better known as traumatic brain injuries (TBI) happen every year in the United States. 44 million youth athletes engage in sporting activities each year. Additionally, 170 million adults participate in sporting activities with the majority of them being elite or professional-level athletes. Despite the many advantages associated with physical exercise athletes pose a risk of injury including head concussions. The number of ER visits as a result of head concussions from sports or recreation activities has skyrocketed by 60% increasing the number to 175,000 patients annually. The Pathophysiology of a concussion is multiplex and understanding the mechanism of the injury is derived from privatized models. Upon impact to the head the brain initially lags behind the movement of the skull only to bounce towards the impact hence affecting the inner skull then settles where it was originally before the impact. Primitive studies suggest that almost half of the brain injuries are sustained through rotational forces and the other half is because of the force of the impact.
The symptoms of concussions vary from individual to another and often involve early and late symptoms. Early symptoms occur within minutes to hours and often include a vacant stare, confusion or the inability to focus on a subject, slurred or incomplete speech, nausea, vomiting, delayed verbal responses, vertigo, repeating questions and memory deficits.
