Information technology continues to influence all sectors of life, including the healthcare industry. It has shaped how information or data is collected, stored, analyzed, and utilized in making informed healthcare decisions. The current paper is a brief representation of some of the key trends in healthcare information technology by describing current and future trends, the challenges and risks involved, issues around data safety, and a conclusion on the most promising technological trends.
Current and Emerging Trends
Changes in technology have revolutionized the delivery of healthcare services in different aspects. Examples include collecting and utilizing health data and records to support evidence-based practices and patient-centered care and enhance access to medical services by strengthening communication alternatives among medical professionals and between care service providers and patients. Some of the key trends include the Internet of Medical Things (a healthcare version of the Internet of Things), telemedicine & telehealth, and Artificial Intelligence.
The emergence of the Internet of Things has resulted in wearables and trackers. These systems are designed to provide detailed and real-time data on a patient's state (Kelly et al., 2020). Both professionals and patients have access to data that helps monitor the patient remotely, a technology referred to as Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM).
