Introduction
It is important to review the Institute of Medicine (IOM) report and the role of state-based action coalitions in enhancing access and healthcare delivery models in the United States. The IOM transformed the healthcare issues by addressing various healthcare quality and access issues, including the role of nurse professionals within the envisioned healthcare system. This report reviews IOM report recommendations on the future of nursing practice, advancement, and education and the role of state-based coalitions within this envisioned healthcare delivery model.
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative
At the Institute of Medicine (IOM), the Committee on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing created a strategic plan to transform how the healthcare system functioned. The team committed its efforts to develop a healthcare system that would enhance access to quality care to different population groups across the United States (U.S.), promote disease prevention and wellness, enhance health and treatment outcomes, and offer more patient-centered and empathetic care across an individual’s lifespan. In other words, the committee envisions a future healthcare system that emphasizes illness prevention and primary care. The healthcare delivery model would be anchored on effective care coordination and interprofessional collaboration. Within this healthcare delivery model, reimbursements would be based on value instead of volumes of services provided. Quality healthcare would be provided at a relatively affordable price for both persons and the community (Sullivan, 2018). More importantly, the healthcare system would consistently demonstrate its responsiveness to individuals’ desires and needs by providing more patient-centered care.
Key Messages
The four key messages that form the IOM Report recommendations include (a) the need for nurse professionals to deliver services to the optimal level of their educational training and competence, (b) nursing professionals should attain higher education and training levels via a better education system that encourages continuous academic progression, (c) nurses should practice via interprofessional collaboration with doctors and other medical professionals, particularly in reforming the U.S. healthcare, and (d) the need for effective policy-making and workforce planning to be anchored on better information infrastructure and credible data gathering procedures (Sullivan, 2018).
The first recommendation ensures that nursing professionals provide care to the optimal scope of their education and training qualifications by analyzing evidence and conducting scientific investigation to influence interdisciplinary practice to enhance value via initiatives that improve quality outcomes and encourage illness prevention as well as population’s wellness.
