In this article published at the BMC Health Services Research, Godfrey et al (2013) talks on how clinicians can develop a prevention system of care to detect and prevent delirium in the ICU. The article discusses an assessment tool called the Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP) to detect and prevent delirium. The tool uses an experienced interdisciplinary team aided by trained volunteers and a team of proactive geriatric consultation with targeted recommendations founded on a structured protocol. In this article by Richard Haugh (2011), delirium is noted as one of the major problems afflicting America today. The article points out that delirium that is acquired from the hospital is mostly left undiagnosed and untreated thus causing an even larger problem for the health care system. According to Haugh, delirium affects nearly 70% of the patients in ICU and is, therefore, a serious problem that needs to be addressed. If not detected and treated, the disease continues to affect patients long after they leave the hospital. Although not the core area of this research, the article will be crucial in developing the introduction to the research paper.
