It sought to clarify curricular and practice expectations as outlined in the Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Nursing Practice (2006, DNP Essentials), and highlight practice scholarship and academic partnership opportunities. Naturally, a professional transition of this magnitude has generated many questions and provides an opportunity for reflection.
The DNP Implementation Task Force presents this white paper as an important resource for the evolution of the practice doctorate in nursing. Based on the changing landscape in the healthcare sector and higher education over the last decade, there has been a rapid growth of the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs. In 2015, the Board of Directors of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) formed a task force to review the state of DNP programs. The following are some of the significant changes that are discussed in the DNP implementation report and which affect the DNP programs.
The first change is that of the curricula, where the task force recommended that educators should be transparent to students. In particular, I agree with the members of the AACN taskforce that an electronic student portfolio should be used as a tool to track the progress of students. The achievement of the DNP program outcomes offers proper evidence that the design of curricula or teaching experiences support learners’ readiness to apply the acquired knowledge and skills. Second, the length of a post-baccalaureate full-time DNP program should be three or four years (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2015).
