Introduction
Sharma et al. (2016) defines collaborative decision making as a process of combining input from all stakeholders with the aim of reaching the best choice on the matter under consideration. Effective communication is one of the best approaches that determine the success or failure of any meeting that intends to meet a particular objective. I attended a Trauma Rehabilitation Committee meeting to understand how collaborative decision making impact the quality of service to patients at the facility. The purpose of attending the meeting was to observe the interaction of committee members during the meeting process and determine whether the committee had used collaborative approach to make decisions. The meeting was held at one of the local settings in our area and one of the objectives was to determine how the facility could deliver best services to members of public. Some of those in attendance were the facility administrator, director of quality and education, assistant director of nursing, nursing educator, director of marketing, four beneficiaries of the rehabilitation program, and six members that were still undergoing rehabilitation at the center. The administrator chaired the meeting, assisted by the director of quality and education. This paper is a report of my observation from the Trauma Rehabilitation Committee meeting that I attended on 29th Sept. 2018.
Observations
Some of the things I noted were the communication and turn-taking during the interaction of the members. The chairperson was in charge of the meeting but spent a lot of time talking. Even though he was kind to give other members a chance to air their views, some members did not get enough time to air their views. During the discussion in the best strategy of increasing outreach and recruitment of new members, the facility administrator appeared to have answers for every issue and forced the members to embrace his opinion. Some members in the meeting did not talk throughout the meeting, despite the fact that they had come prepared to air their views.
