Millennium Development Goals
The Millennium Development Goals are part of the international goals, which were formulated in 2000 by the United Nations at the millennium summit. There are eight goals which the various states that are part of the United Nations have to abide by. One of the goals is to improve the maternal health across the world. The maternal health goal is tied to the high rate deaths associated with maternal care or lack of it. The goal is divided into two targets, 5A and 5B (Who.int, 2015). 5A relates to the reduction by three quarters between 1990 and 2015 of the maternal mortality ratio and increasing the proportion of the births that are attended to by professionals (Un.org, 2015). Target 5B is to achieve universal access to reproductive health, relative to antenatal care coverage, family planning needs, contraceptives and adolescent birth rate.
