Surgical units are the most vulnerable areas for hospital-acquired infections in health facilities. The best way to minimize these infections without incurring significant costs is by preventing the actual occurrence. Thus, both patients and health care professionals should ensure maximum prevention of the infections. Research conducted by Hughes (2008) shows that they cannot be minimized to zero infections, but excellent coordination between patients and professionals can yield seventy percent or more minimization levels. Therefore, as the department manager, I would urge them to work as a team to achieve and maintain the maximum minimization of the infections. Besides, the treatment cost is high than prevention, and it has resulted in significant problems in the department, including and not limited to termination of the previous head of department. On the other hand, the high prevalence of the surgical units' infections calls for immediate attention and actions. The issue is not only affecting our facility but also other hospitals across the globe. According to Haque et al. (2018), the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention identifies approximately 1.7million patients hospitalized for other issues with hospital-acquired infections. Thus, the issue is prevalent in health care and especially surgical units, and it should be prevented to minimize the treatment cost.
It is not the duty of health care professionals to ensure the prevention of infections. The patients should also participate in the process. Besides, it is their health at stake, and they must minimize such issues to promote quick healing processes. In this case, I will first instate a training program for the patients. The education process will equip them with knowledge on how they should conduct themselves to reduce the chances of contracting infections (Dancer, 2014).
