1 What is Healthy People 2020?
Health People 2020 refers to roadmap and nationwide disease prevention and health promotion initiative or network that envisions to improve people’s health and realize health equity (Blakey, n.d). Incepted in 1979, Healthy People has served as a comprehensive blueprint for national disease prevention and health promotion efforts in public health. The agenda provides a set of specific and measurable goals to be achieved by 2020 alongside their targets in the United States and globally. The initiative comprises of 42 topic areas and more than 1200 objectives (Blakey n.d). The initiative’s overarching goals include, the promotion of quality of life and healthy behaviors and development create physical and social environment which promotes good heath among all people, achieve equity and address disparities, and achieve longer and quality lives free of preventative diseases, premature deaths, disability, and injury.

The website has a feature known as “Healthy People Data 2020” that provides not only data and statistical information, but also infographics, data charts, and data analysis (Blakey, n.d). The data presents by HealthyPeople.gov is reliable for individuals with little to no experience in data science. For example, the presentation of data using infographics simplifies the interpretation of data to users who have no experience with data. The resource is invaluable to students, clinicians, policy makers, and professionals within and outside the discipline of public health.
