Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by Treponema pallidum bacteria. It can also be spread via mother to their unborn child, resulting in congenital syphilis if left untreated in 80 percent of all cases (Trivedi et al., 2019). Congenital syphilis significantly contributes to adverse pregnancy outcomes, including preterm birth, congenital infection, and infant and fetal mortality (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018). According to the Arizona Department of Health Services (2018), partnering with medical agencies is vital in educating expectant mothers and their partners and educating healthcare providers on proper diagnostics and treatment. The project will contribute to understanding hindrances and enablers to influence healthcare providers’ behavioral inclinations within syphilis diagnostics and management in expectant mothers.
Regarding the context of the problem, CS constitutes an infectious infection emanating from the transplacental passing of Treponema pallidum from the mother to the unborn baby during pregnancy (Patel et al., 2018). The main behaviors observed in pregnant women infected with syphilis included having an STI history or having multiple intimate partners within the prior year. The problem is also observed in no or late prenatal care, which constitutes a risk factor for the infection (Trivedi et al., 2019).
Congenital syphilis trends increasingly mirror patterns in primary and secondary (P&S) syphilis amongst women of childbearing age. After plateauing at a comparatively low rate from 2011 to 2013, the incidence of reported P&S syphilis amongst all women has heightened annually since then. For example, from 2014 to 2018, the incidence of the diseases among women rose 172.7 percent from 1.1 to 3.0 cases in every 100,000 females. Although many CS cases happen among newborns whose mothers have had some threshold of prenatal care, limited or late prenatal care has been linked to the infection (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018).
