Introduction
The medical field has experienced tremendous changes over the past decades. Initially, there was more focus on the doctor-to-patient relationship without a look at the other aspects that influence the patient outcomes. These aspects include things such as the technological application in diagnosis and treatment of a patient. In this age however, technological advancement has ensured that there is a great improvement in patient outcomes and disease management, since there is increased accuracy when it comes to treatment and management of a disease. While they have brought a lot of benefits to the medical sector, they have also had a little disadvantages which in one way or the other, impacts the service delivery. The major shift in the medical field has been in the embracement of digitization, where most patient records are now being placed in electronic databases. This has given rise to Electronic Health Records and Electronic Medical Records. This paper looks at the various aspects through which technological trends impact healthcare, with a view of the future trends that might impact the field.
Technology trends in healthcare
The increasing costs of healthcare, the rising number of the aging population, and the emergence of global pendemic conditions such as diabetes, obesity, and cancer have resulted into the introduction of numerous technologies in healthcare. The goal of these technologies is early detection and hence timely diagnosis and treatment of these ailments. When they become chronic, it becomes an uphill task to treat or control. Among the technologies used to address these problems at my workplace are electronic Medication Administration Record (eMAR) and Voalte technology. eMar is a cutting edge technology that instinctively documents medication patterns into Electronic Health Records systems using electronically readable tagging or tracking sensors. eMar allows healthcare providers, especially physicians and pharmacists, to access the history of patient’s medication in real time (HealthIT.gov., 2018c). This technology is crucial in ensuring that there is a log of all the medications that a patient has taken, or simply a patient’s medical history.
These records constitute a permanent log of the patient, and are subject to constant and regular update based on the health of the patient. The technology is quite helpful especially for nurses, who might want to know the medical and medication history of a given patient before going ahead with a new treatment regime. This is often important especially in cases where the nature of medication is quite strong or the patient’s immune system is reactive to some other forms of medication.
On the other hand, Voalte technology allows healthcare professionals to receive and respond to messages, call lights, and emergency alarms quickly. The use of Voalte technology establishes a quite hospital environment by eliminating noise and enhances workflows by providing a platform that healthcare professionals use to monitor the development of patients (Hansen et al., 2018).
