Health policies
Obesity is a major public health concern in both children and adults. Any range of weight of an individual above the ideal weight considered healthy for specific height is defined as overweight or obese. Childhood obesity is an increasing crisis regarding health and the welfare of the child, with increased prevalence of approximately 16.9% of children between 2-19 years being obese today. National evidence-based policies against childhood obesity include entrenching effective prevention approaches focusing on encouraging physical activity such as provision of community gyms for children, and provision of a nutritious diet can be effective in managing childhood obesity. Increasing access to healthy foods, establishment of walk paths and bike paths as well as playgrounds constitute strategies to alleviate childhood obesity (Karnik & Kanekar, 2012).
Global/national prevention
Family influence in shaping the behavior of the child and lifestyle including; overeating and appropriate food choices, increased physical activity, constitute the basic intervention in preventing childhood obesity.
