Glaucoma is a Chronic Disorder of the Eye
Glaucoma is a chronic disorder of the eye. It refers to a condition that damages the optic nerve. The optic nerve is a critical component of vision. In glaucoma, this nerve is destroyed by a high-pressure buildup in the eye. The pathophysiological underpinnings of this condition are that increased intraocular pressure interferes with the normal functioning of the optic nerve. The pressure buildup significantly constricts the optical nerve rendering it unable to relay visual information to the brain for processing. The compression resulting from the pressure may lead to total damage to this nerve and, consequently, loss of vision (Baudouin et al., 2021). Prostaglandins pharmacologically treat this condition. These drugs include latanoprost, bimatoprost, and tafluprost. The drugs increase the outflow of fluid from the eye, easing the pressure.
