Human sexuality is a complex phenomenon involving the interaction of an individual’s biological sex, gender role behavior, and core gender identity. In society, it is common to find that society deems older people as people who lack sexual drive. Arguably, this misconception arises from the views collected from research polls over the last decade. The hypothesis illustrates that humans tend to lose 1% of their physical abilities as they advance in age. Besides, psychologists aver that the body begins lowering its metabolism after attaining the age of 30 years. Consequently, this premise is applicable in the explanation of why human sexuality in older adults appears gross.
After closing schools for the long holiday, I spent most of my time visiting my grandmother, who resided in the upcountry parts. My visit seemed to be the perfect timing for my grandmother because she would team up with her friends and go to the bi-weekly crochet club. I would not understand why going to the club appeared ideal for her, but later I began to unravel the puzzle. For instance, each time my grandmother went out, she returned home happy. Upon inquiry, I realized that the older adults spent their time talking about their present life and reflecting on past relationships.
Although my grandmother would narrate her daily itinerary, I would never hear her mention or consider anything regarding her sexuality. Because of her secretive nature, I perceived that she felt uncomfortable discussing with me such privy matters. One of the most remarkable conclusions from the talk was the advice she would tell other young ladies. For example, she would implore them to avoid indulging in any romantic practices with men. My grandmother’s assertion helped me understand that she felt lonely because she does not have an active sex life like other women. Certainly, attaining menopause seems to have adversely impaired their sexual life.
Conversely, after engaging various psychologists, I realized that men suffer from the same fate after developing erectile dysfunction. Notably, the latter condition and menopause are some of the primary hindrances affecting older adults when dealing with sexuality. The occurrence of these problems in the sexual life of older adults seems to impair their independence, making them dependents. Based on these personal and up-close experiences, it is evident that sexuality fades away as humans’ advance in age.
