Robert Wood Foundation (RWJF)
The RWJF Committee Initiative and IOM collaborated to create The Future of Nursing report and recommendations. The report calls for a redesign of health care and improving nurses’ capacity in addressing health care needs and improving nursing education. The report further recommends changing the health care, which supports better care quality and nursing labor force, so that nurses are better placed to provide care and reduce the nursing shortage (Rollins, 2016). The project was implemented to advance health where nurses are learners and partner with other health practitioners to provide care was the nurses exercise full practice authority. The regional action coalitions influence change and implementation of the proposed recommendations and initiatives.
Messages in IOM Report
The report highlights that nurses are to practice based on education and training, where there is transformation of healthcare. Additionally, nurses are partners and there is improvement in data and information collected to improve the workforce. Education and training make it possible for the nurses to practice to the fullest extent where they were to practice authority. This was based on the observation that education and training are important to improve advanced nursing practice making it possible to provide quality care. Thus, there is emphasis on achieving higher levels of education and lifelong learning that makes it easier for nurses to transition to advanced nursing practice (IOM, 2011). This is further linked to the recommendation that there is removal of the scope of practice barriers.

There is greater focus on fostering interprofessional collaboration where groups are involved in implementing the IOM recommendations (Peltzer et al., 2016). To ensure that there is an effective workforce, there is a need for data and information to influence planning and policy formulations. Access to timely data and information drives progress sand establishing quality standards to improve of health care quality.
Action coalitions
The state-based action coalitions are vital in implementing the Future of Nursing recommendations, and these coalitions bring together diverse stakeholders to implement the IOM suggestions. Typically, nursing organizations and the non-nursing organizations are collaborative partners who support the development of nursing leaders as well as advancing nurses’ education and competencies (Peltzer et al., 2016). The RWJF funds the action coalitions in an effort to facilitate the current nurses and future nurses to be better prepared in providing care and nurse leadership roles. The action coalitions also help meeting the needs of the future nursing workforce in an environment where there is high-quality health care delivery and advanced nursing practice.
