The quantitative research study chosen for this discussion is that of Gonzales et al. (2016), that assesses the learning styles of students in graduate entry nursing programs. The research is among the few that have investigated the learning styles. Its main objective was to explain the different learning styles of nursing students at the graduate entry level. The study used a descriptive design to accurately portray the participants and describe their behavior without influencing them in any way. Two hundred and two nursing student volunteers were presented with the index of learning style questionnaire at the Southwestern University (Gonzales et al., 2016). The method used to analyze the data was descriptive statistics, which is important in figuring out the fundamental features of the data when conducting research. The descriptive statistics incorporated frequencies, dispersion, and measures of centrality (Gonzales et al., 2016). Quantitative studies involve subjects completing questionnaires. In this case, the students were administered with the index of learning styles as a means of data collection. The study is also quantitative since it involves a large number of studies. Two hundred and two participants is a substantially large number compared to that used for qualitative research.
The study by Cook, Meade, and Perry (2001) can be regarded as a qualitative study. The research was aimed at investigating the weaning experiences of the identified patients as a result of mechanical ventilation. The study is observational and involves recording the psychological status of the patients, who in this case were 43 patients that had successfully undergone weaning for 48-96 hours. The results were obtained after the researchers administered a questionnaire containing 32 key items to the patients (Cook, Meade & Perry, 2001).
