Family Genogram
This is a case of AJ, a 25-year-old male, Caucasian, Roman Catholic, born in San Francisco, California, who was managed with alcohol use disorder in the institution and treated with medications and supportive psychotherapy. The family genogram analyzed the existing family factors that affected the patient’s condition. Furthermore, it was used to understand the relationships between family members and how the condition of one of the members affects the others, which eventually influences their actions toward the patient.
General Characteristics of the Family Members
The family genogram viewed the relationships with the patient’s nuclear family. BM, a 55-year-old man, and AM, a 53-year-old woman, are married via a civil wedding and are blessed with three children, namely, AA, a 28-year-old female, AJ, a 25-year-old male, and AK, a 16-year-old female. AA is married to BD, a 30-year-old man, and they have a daughter, BN, a two-year-old child. All family members are alive and identify themselves as homosexual. BM, AM, AJ, and AK live in the same household, while AA, BD, and BN live in a different household together.
Diseases of the Family Members
BM has been diagnosed with hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), and alcohol use disorder, while AM has been diagnosed with type 2 DM and major depressive disorder (MDD). AA, AJ, AK, BN, and BD have not been diagnosed with or had a consultation regarding any diseases or mental disorders.
Family Relationships
Although claiming that he is still in love with AM, BM admitted that he sometimes resorted to violence against her when he cannot drink enough alcoholic beverages in a day or when he is too drunk. BM also claimed that he usually hurts AJ, his only son, whenever he is drunk because he thinks he is good for nothing and only works as a part-timer. However, BM denies hurting his other children. Due to this, AJ grew distant from BM but maintained his close relationship with his mother and siblings. However, AJ recently became an alcoholic like his father and became violent with words against his sisters, which resulted in conflict among the siblings. AA and AK think AJ’s actions are unacceptable and blame their father for what happened to their brother, resulting in an estranged relationship with their father. AA is happily married and on good terms with BN despite the circumstances, and they help each other raise their only child.

One of the most pressing public health concerns is alcoholism, which has a significant negative impact on the basic unit of society, which is the family.
