Fever is not in itself an illness; rather, it is a symptom of an underlying condition. It can be caused by the attempt of the immune system to combat infection (Evans, Repasky & Fisher, 2015). As the body temperature rises, it assists an individual to resolve an infection. It can also be due to the side effects of some medications and stroke. Further, thermoregulation failure (hyperthermia) can cause a sharp increase in body temperature leading to fever. Here, the body is unable to control the temperature, and it increases beyond the required level.

During inflammation and infection, the body undertakes an adaptive mechanism to control the infection. Microbial stimuli activate phagocytes from the bone marrow to release endogenous pyrogen (Arango & Descoteaux, 2014). The hormone, in turn, moves to the thermoregulatory part of the brain where it increases the set-point for normal temperature.
