The Future of Nursing in an Evolving Health Care System
The nursing professionals have proved to be very vital to the health care system. Since the legislation of the insurance cover for all American citizens in 2010 the health care system was faced by the challenge to provide the best health care services to the increased demanding public. Due to the increased demand for health care services the health care systems have to evolve and utilize the available resources diligently to be able to cater for the increased demand. The nursing workforce is the largest among the health care professionals with over 3 million nurses trained and registered in the United States (Institute of Medicine, 2011). The challenge facing health care service delivery was how to optimally utilize the available workforce including the nurse fraternity and how to make them work more efficiently in collaboration with all healthcare workers including the doctors.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee in collaboration with the Institute of Medicine (IOM) carried out a research to identify the barriers to the high quality and effective health care which was the demand of the current health care system and the public. The goal of the partnership that was formed in 2008 by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Institute of Medicine was to look at ways to transform the nursing profession so as meet the challenges of the demanding and changing healthcare system (Institute of Medicine, 2011). The report that came forth from the study was to find ways through which the future of nursing could be change and make recommendations on how the nursing workforce can be made more effective and be able to offer high quality health care at the lowest cost possible.
The research on the nursing workforce on ways that could change the working in the health care sector yielded a report “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health”. This report makes recommendations that are specific and directed on how the nursing workforce can be enhanced through thorough training, education and professional leadership and making effective workforce policy that could change how health care service is delivered to the demanding system (Institute of Medicine, 2011). The report recommends continued research and improvement on the workforce through collaborations that could be vital to the improvement of service quality and effectiveness of the force. The report is concerned with the challenges that have faced the current health care system and the increasing demand for quality health care and notes that their collaboration is very vital since nurses are important in ensuring that health care is effective and of high quality (Korniewicz, 2015).
