An advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) prepares herself to serve the humanity with better clinical education and advanced didactic. Besides traditional learning programs, she opts for technical courses or subjects to expand her knowledge, plan things properly, practice at the highest level, and work in either a generalist or specialist capacity (Perry, 2016). In the 1970s and early 1980s, in Canada, nurses were given a chance to choose their specialized programs from a range of available courses. In 1971, the Boudreau report received widespread acceptance in no time. It suggested that APRNs should be trained to meet both primary and advanced healthcare needs across the country (Brant, 2013).
The report also recommended to extend their roles within a healthcare system so that the APRNs could contribute to the well-being of patients. At first, there was a suggestion that the APRN’s role should be beyond assisting the physician in a healthcare center. The nurse should be assigned complicated tasks and given a chance to address all issues herself, set her priorities and understand responsibilities toward the hospital (Perry, 2016). By the 1990s, there were plenty of opportunities of career and self-grooming provided to APRNs, not only in Canada but also in the United States, Europe and worldwide. The University of Montreal and McMaster University initiated specific programs in 1970 that focused on preparing nurses to work in both rural and urban settings (Shea, 2015).
Soon, after the release and success of the Boudreau report, there were a large number of programs developed to prepare APRNs for a challenging tomorrow.
