The Evolution and Development of the APRN-Faith Integration
The nursing profession embodies selflessness, compassion, and the desire to help those in need. Over the years, the nursing profession has progressed to include advanced practice registered nurses (APRN) who provide nursing care and diagnose and treat patients ailing from different medical conditions. APRNs have incorporated certain Biblical teachings and virtues in their practice to provide patient-centered care and better the lives of their patients. The purpose of this paper is to explore whether and how early APRNs displayed the Biblical Beatitudes in Matthew 5: 1-16 in their nursing work.
The Beatitudes are part of the Sermon on the Mount that was given by Jesus to his disciples. These Beatitudes are presented in Mathew 5: 3-11 and start at the mountain where a multitude was gathered, and Jesus went up there. His disciples gathered around him as students, and he began to teach them. Jesus taught his disciples eight Beatitudes that addressed the destitute, the mourning, the kind, the hungry and thirsty, those providing mercy, the pure in heart, the peace-makers, the hounded and reproached (Abarim Publications, n.d.). In particular, each of the Beatitudes described by Jesus represents a blessing, something positive that will happen to those described in the Beatitude. For instance, the first Beatitude in Matthew 5: 3 is directed to the destitute and says, “untouchable the destitute to the spirit that it is the kingdom of the heavens (Abarim Publications).” The destitute to the spirit is poor, but they are promised the kingdom of God in heaven. By teaching these Beatitudes, Jesus was giving his followers hope, hope that they shall be rewarded despite their suffering in their current situation. He was also making a promise to them. The mourning is promised to be near-called while the kind is promised to sharehold the earth. The hungry and thirsty are promised provision, and the merciful are promised mercy. Each of the Beatitude has a promise at the end, and this promise is a blessing. In Matthew 5:12, Jesus went ahead and told his followers to rejoice “that the wage of you much into the heavens thus for they hounded the prophets before you (Abarim Publications).” The rewards that Jesus promises in the Beatitudes will not necessarily be received here on earth. The Beatitudes were to show the followers that God would reward their experiences and actions in heaven.
The history of APRNs dates back to the 19th century, when nurses stepped up to meet the needs of suffering patients when physicians could not. Specifically, the history of nurse anesthetists dates back to the American Civil War in the 19th century when two nurses in different instances used chloroform when attending to wounded patients (Tracy & O'Grady, 2019).
