Ethics for Health Care
Ethical dilemmas refer to predicaments, which tend to arise when a difficult challenge faces a person, and the solution to the challenge will not be pleasant to all people. In the healthcare sector, such predicaments are often common, and they usually entail medical practitioners choosing between options that seem equally unacceptable. According to Levy et al. (2018), the healthcare sector is complex, and each of the decisions made by practitioners and other care providers can often result in conflicts. Deciding which choice is ethically correct is a critical aspect in which healthcare industry professionals are needed to navigate, no matter how uncomfortable it might be for other people. High ethical standards are a requirement for all persons working in healthcare organizations. In this regard, health care professionals have to be aware of the best approaches to deal with various ethical dilemmas.
Health care professionals' duties and responsibilities are problematic as they deal with human beings' health and lives. Vaccinations play a significant role in controlling and preventing many infectious diseases, such as smallpox, polio, measles, mumps, and whooping cough. Despite the impact of vaccination, some parents tend to choose not to vaccinate their children. This is illustrated in the case study, which has parents who are against their daughter being vaccinated.
In this case study, Jenna and Chris Smith are against their daughter, Ana, being vaccinated. The couple has reinstated that their child will be raised naturally as much possible. Notably, their practitioner, Dr. Angela Kerr (pediatrician), is faced with an ethical dilemma on the best way to make the couple understand that vaccination is essential for their baby girl. Dr. Kerr begins dealing with the dilemma by explaining to the Smiths that vaccines are a contentious topic in many parts of the world. However, Dr. Kerr explains to them the benefits of ensuring that their child is vaccinated against diseases. She also proposes to the Smith on some of the best safe ways established by the federal government's Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). Lastly, Dr. Kerr has to remind the couple how vacci...
