Discuss one ethical and one legal issue related to the use of EHRs that directly impact advanced registered nursing practice.
Ethical Issue
The primary ethical issue emanating from EHR’s in advanced nursing practice is that it could lead to incomplete or inaccurate documentation. Such mishaps expose patients to malfunction or injury, a vice that is ethically not acceptable. The incompleteness and inaccuracy exhibited by EHR’s in advanced nursing stem from the failure to transfer all data from paper to EHR. Besides, practitioners’ inability to sign their notes or probably indicating on the provided boxes/fields that a specific medication was administered. Problems in auto filing, dictation errors, lack of a system to countercheck information entered in the EHRs escalates ethical issues in the nursing profession. Research suggests that patients might end up having more than one medication, which can ultimately cause injury or agonizing death (Balestra, 2017).
