Ethical Issues in Healthcare
Ethical issues are inevitable in the nursing practice. One of the ethical problems I had witnessed in my workplace was involving patient confidentiality (Ulrich et al., 2010). A patient who visited the hospital in critical health condition underwent surgery successfully. Since he was not accompanied by any family member, the nurse who was responsible in taking care of him made an effort and located his wife and children without informing him since he was in recovery. When the patient started feeling well, he said that the hospital breached his confidentiality rights by informing his family members since he did not want them to know.
The two primary ethical principles or theories pertinent to my place of work are beneficence and nonmaleficence. In particular, beneficence entails doing the right thing and the best for the patient. Nonmaleficence involves not harming the patient intentionally or unintentionally (Hoskins, Grady, & Ulrich, 2018).
