The article Ethical dilemmas faced by health care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic: Issues, implications, and suggestions by Menon and Padhy (2020) delineates some of the ethical dilemmas that the health care workers have had to battle with during the unprecedented times of the COVID-19 pandemic. The article also provides some useful tips on how the health care workers and the health institutions, in general, can maneuver these trying times. COVID-19 pandemic has ravaged the whole world, and the ethical uncertainties experienced by the healthcare institutions from one country while battling the pandemic is a replica of what is experienced in any other country. The degree to which the uncertainty is faced might be the only variation owing to the different development levels across the globe. Nonetheless, the dilemmas raised in the articles cut across, making the article a useful resource in addressing the ethics of health promotion.
According to the article, health care workers are caught in the middle of caring for the patients and protecting their loved ones and themselves from contracting COVID-19. Also, the health care workers are often torn between committing the resources available to COVID-19 patients with high chances of survival and abiding by the Hippocratic Oath that requires them to give every patient the best care available (Menon & Padhy, 2020). Another ethical dilemma, according to the authors, arises when the healthcare workers have COVID-19 symptoms. Should they report the symptoms, they risk being stigmatized and could suffer mental health issues, a menace that has come along with the pandemic. On the other hand, if the health care worker keeps quiet about the symptoms and goes about their duties, they risk spreading the deadly disease even further.
