Emergency Nurses’ Patient Safety Practice
Emergency nurses should have high competency levels concerning patient safety, considering the individuals’ critical conditions admitted for care in the department. The department is complex and dynamic, whereby recurring patient safety events always occur. These incidents pose significant challenges to emergency nurses since they may not predict and control the department’s occurrence of situations. However, they should not compromise their duty of ensuring patients’ safety due to the challenges they experience in their work department. Emergency nurses should always prioritize and ensure that the required patient safety is implemented and adhered to in all circumstances.
The idea of emergency nurses ensuring patient safety should first become their initiative. Durgun & Kaya (2018) argues that nurses should understand that patient sensitivity has increased, and it requires attention towards intervention. Their knowledge and expertise are significant to patient safety. Further, Durgun & Kaya (2018) study shows that their attitudes towards management of the issue are also essential. However, most nurses, including those working in emergency departments, portray medium levels of patient safety attitudes. While they should show full concern and implement actions geared to improve patient safety, they instead take the issue lightly and show little or no concern. According to Durgun & Kaya (2018), emergency department nurses’ average attitude towards patient safety is not based on aspects such as age, gender, education level, nursing experience, time of operation in the department, and emergency department certification. However, the attitude varies between the age groups and the patient safety scale’s defining stress scale (Durgun & Kaya, 2018). The emergency admitted and working together for a certain period are likely to have the same attitude towards patient safety. Also, the emphasis put on the issue highly determines their retaliation. Emergency nurses should have personal endeavors in managing desirable attitudes towards patient safety.
Which factors contribute to the safety competency of emergency nurses? While emergency nurses may have the required skills for their work, they need to learn how to manage and ensure patient safety in the department. Han & Roh (2020) claim that the department should engage in training programs to tailor the nurses to strengthen patient safety. They ought to show competency in the issue because it affects most of the patients under their care. On the other hand, teamwork and emergency nurses’ psychological safety is also significant (Han & Roh, 2020). They can only ensure competency in patien...
