Effects of Family Member Involvement in the Intensive Care Unit
Introduction
According to Frivold (2022), family members play an essential role in the overall well-being of a critically ill patient. Thus, when a patient is in the intensive care unit, most family members want to be involved in the patient's care. However, nurses and other health care professionals sometimes hesitate to include family members, especially critically ill patients. The main reason for the staff's hesitance is the fear of increased staff burnout and decreased work satisfaction (Frivold, 2022). Thus, the main objective of the research was to determine why it is important for family members to get involved in patient care for individuals in ICU.
Family Members View
Through a descriptive exploratory qualitative study, Frivold conducted research using a sample of various family members of patients in ICU. A group focus interview was conducted, focusing on why family members would want to get involved in patient care. The findings were that most family members are always willing and ready to participate in the care. According to Frivold (2022), nurses are responsible for exploring various methods that can be adopted to ensure family member participation and, at the same time, protect the interests of a patient. The findings from the research indicate the importance of family members' involvement is that they are involved in decision-making, especially when the patient is in no position to give consent (Burns et al., 2018). The other importance is that it creates a state of mutual respect between the staff and nurses, increasing family satisfaction. According to Jafarpoor's (2020) research, respect and trust are created when the family members are involved in dialogues with the nursing staff and are given the needed information about the patient.
