Two Clients in Family Therapy
The two clients taken through the family therapy were Cate, a teenager 16-year-old girl, and her mother. Important to note is the fact that it was Cate’s first time to attend a counseling session. Through the sessions, Cate reveals that she informed her parents about her desire to commit suicide due to some depressive feelings and anxiety about life. For instance, there were reports from the parents concerning the girl’s unbecoming behavior where she’s very argumentative while in the house for the last couple of months. Her actions have made it very difficult for the parents to be very strict on her to the extent of locking her out completely.
Cate’s Description
Cate is a 16-year-old girl who attended family therapy sessions in the company of her mother. The teenager indicates that she’s been experiencing anxiety and feels hopeless within the last couple of months. Such feelings could be attributed to the passing-on of her younger sister. According to the mother, Cate is a brilliant girl and has been performing well in her classwork. However, the performance has deteriorated of late.
Cate also confesses to not being interested in classwork alongside various activities that she enjoyed formerly. Further, the mother reports the daughter as having sleepless nights and is always distracted. Cate confirms the fact that in most instances, she feels suicidal and worthless to society. Such thoughts have made her lose weight, have a poor appetite, and make her feel very weak to perform various house chores. The anxiety and lack of peace have made her easily irritable, always making her easily engage family members in a fight.
These derivatives depend on the belief that health-related behavior towards chronic diseases comprises of either the desire of an individual to live a healthy life or receive healing and the perception that certain courses of action would ensure prevention or rather curative mechanisms. However, the ultimate response from an individual is a function of the perceived benefits and barriers associated with healthy behavior.
Description of the Mother
According to the mother, she cannot handle her daughter since she also has other issues that she is currently dealing with. The mother was diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at a young age after being sexually abused by an assailant. Further, she confesses to being brought up in a dysfunctional family whereby she got involved in extensive drug abuse from such early years of her lifetime. From her perspective, she is very concerned about ensuring that her daughter does not pass through such traumatic events. This has made her be somehow very strict on her daughter’s moves and associations. There is also the aspect of feeling bereaved after the loss of her last born daughter; therefore, at times feels unable to handle her daughter’s tantrums. The mother also reported that she had undergone cognitive behavioral therapy after being sexually abused and was not provided with any treatment since then.
