Introduction
One of the most persistent problems today is diabetes. This controllable, but hard to manage disease afflicts millions of individuals each year because of personal reasons, such as unhealthy lifestyle and even failure to listen to professional with regards to diabetes regulation. As stated by the WHO about 371 million people in the world is diagnosed with diabetes, and the numbers of those undiagnosed comes to almost the same numbers. Based on previous researches, it was found out that some of the major reasons for the continuous increase of the numbers of diabetic people are (1) lack of effectiveness of current assessment methods and (2) inefficient educative tools for the diabetic patients. In this article, the author would focus on the second aspect (educative tools) and also a way to evaluate its effectiveness through time. This is in line with the author’s belief that education programs are crucial right now, especially because patients who fail to comply with the treatments, medications, and suggestion provided by their doctors are found to have a higher morbidity rate than people who comply or even those who don’t start treatments at all (Currie, et al., 2012). As stated before noncompliance, refers to the case when a patient miss “more than one scheduled visit or having at least one provider code for not taking medications as prescribed” (Currie, et al., 2012).
Proposed Intervention
In line with the education program that is being proposed in this article, the author believes that it would be best to create a program that is both flexible and proactive in its approach. Following from this, it would be better if the program could start with distributing questionnaires for the patients. These questionnaires would include questions like “What do you think pose the biggest obstacle in taking up daily medication?” and/or “Do you regularly use a device (smartphone, tablet, laptop, etc.). Although, there are plenty of other questions that should be added to the questionnaire, the main aim of these questionnaires is to simply create an education program that is tailor-fitted to each and every patient rather than a “one-size-fits-all” program. This questionnaire could help nurses provide an “Evidence-based knowledge and approach” with the shortest time possible, for the next step of the educational program (Lingle, 2013). From this data, nurse educators could then choose from a number of materials (crafted for different situations, with different treatment procedures) which would fit the patient’s lifestyle, economic, and even emotional situation.
