Early Childhood Development and Health
Investments in early childhood development and healthy is an increasingly emerging area of concern in the public health sphere. Evidence suggests that the early years of life significantly influence people's wellbeing, health, cognitive, and behavioral, cognitive functions (WHO, 2021). Early childhood refers to the period from birth to 8 years, and it is a time when human beings experience remarkable growth because development is at its peak. During this period, environmental conditions and factors, including people, have a significant impact on children's development and health. More importantly, early detection and intervention for children with disabilities can significantly enhance their chances for adulthood wellbeing, productivity, inclusion, and healthy life (UNESCO, 2019). While current research has dwelled on the impact of early childhood development and health on adolescence and adulthood, gaps in knowledge are inherent regarding the elderly stage of life. Therefore, the purpose of the paper is to examine and critique current literature on the issue and find existing knowledge gaps that future studies should consider to increase further the emphasis on investments in early childhood development and health.
As the world tackles the inclusivity of people with disabilities in leadership, representation, education, and employment, there is an increasing need to create a solid foundation on which children with disabilities can competitively and confidently anticipate and face additional challenges that come in the elderly stage. Therefore, the purpose of the paper is to assess, examine, and current critical literature on the issue of early childhood development and health and its impact on adolescent, adulthood, and elderly stages of life. The paper will begin by briefly describing the process undertaken to complete a review of current relevant literature in terms of keywords, databases, number of references found, criteria for selecting relevant articles, and the number of articles selected. The next stage will then consider the challenges faced by children with disabilities as they develop and grow into adolescence, adulthood, and elderly stages of life by performing a literature review and discussion of contrasts and similarities within the articles. Recommendations were then outlined based on the discussion outcomes.
Method
Temple and Pare' (2015) outlined six generic steps key in the review of scholarly articles. The steps include the formulation of research questions (and objectives), search for extant literature, screening for inclusion, assessment of primary studies' quality, data extraction, and data analysis. While the paper does not follow the steps outlined, the guideline was key to the arrival of the chosen articles. The keywords or phrases used include childhood, aging, socioeconomic conditions, early childhood care, early childhood development, and the relationship between early childhood and elderly stages. Several databases were used in the search process, including PubMed, Angeline, SCOPUS, and Google Scholar. The choice of databases w...
