The final project for this course is the creation of a disease summary. The topic of communicable diseases is important in our society because such diseases are a major cause of morbidity. Communicable diseases have the potential to overwhelm the capacity of a community. The threat of communicable disease can be better understood when individuals understand how these diseases are transmitted and develop, as well as the signs and symptoms of these diseases, and prevention and treatment measures. As a community health professional, you should have knowledge of communicable diseases and should be able to communicate that knowledge to at-risk populations.

For this project, you will select a communicable disease and, after obtaining instructor approval of your selection, create a disease summary that can be given to individuals who are at risk of contracting or developing the disease. This assessment will allow you to exercise your research skills using scholarly sources and develop critical writing and communication skills. In order to educate people as a community health worker, you need to be knowledgeable of prevention/control measures for the disease you have chosen, as well as how the disease is transmitted. Even more importantly, you need to be able to communicate what you know to those who are at risk.

The project is divided into three milestones, which will be submitted at various points throughout the course to scaffold learning and ensure quality final submissions.

These milestones will be submitted in Modules Two, Four, and Six. The final project will be submitted in Module Seven. In this assignment, you will demonstrate your mastery of the following course outcomes:

 Communicate the importance and relevance of communicable diseases to at-risk populations by explaining their etiology and impacts

 Recommend targeted prevention or treatment options based on the etiology of communicable diseases

 Analyze the development of communicable diseases for identifying at-risk populations

 Utilize basic data analysis skills for examining disease trends within at-risk populations

Introduction
The topic of communicable diseases is vital in modern society because such diseases are responsible for the biggest share of morbidity. Communicable diseases, as witnessed during the Covid-19 pandemic, can potentially overwhelm the public health system of a community. Threats from such diseases are better handled when people understand the underlying mechanisms of disease development, transmission, signs and symptoms, prevention approaches, and treatment alternatives. Malaria is among the most poignant communicable diseases in modern society. In 2020 alone, there were 241 million cases of malaria globally and 627,000 deaths (WHO, 2021). The disease is the world's 4th leading cause of death in children under the age of five, with the majority of deaths occurring in sub-Saharan Africa (Herchline, 2020). Given this impact on humanity, malaria is an important disease that all people should be aware of, be it medical professionals or not. Therefore, the purpose of the current paper is to provide a disease summary of the illness.
Disease History and Etiology
Earlier theories suggest that malaria was caused by bad air: malaria, which loosely translates to bad air. According to the CDC (2015), Sir Ronald Ross built on the work of medical researchers and scholars like Alphonse Leveran to establish that malaria was transmitted through mosquitoes. Malaria is caused by a parasite that commonly infects some types of mosquitoes that feed on humans, such as the female anopheles mosquito. There are four types of malaria parasites that infect humans: Plasmodium malariae, P. vivax, P. falciparum, and P. ovale (CDCa, 2022). Among these, the P. falciparum is the type that leads to severe infections and even death if not properly treated. In addition to the four is the P. knowlesi; a type of malaria that infects macaques in Southeast Asia. Humans can also be infected by the parasite, causing a type of malaria that can be transmitted to humans from animals (zootonicMalaria) instead of from mosquitoes to humans. The discovery of the link between malaria and mosquitoes ended the earlier perceptions of the disease having been either by bad air from the marshlands or through bacteria.
Development and Symptoms
Only Anopheles mosquitoes can transmit malaria. However, they must first be infected by the parasite through a previous blood meal from an infected person. When the mosquito bites an infected person, blood containing a microscopic malaria parasite is taken in. When this mosquito bites an uninfected person a few days later, the said parasites mix with the mosquito's saliva and are injected into the new victim's blood (Meibalan & Marti, 2017). This method of transmission is the most important, especially in regions where the population of Anopheles mosquitoes thrives, such as sub-Saharan Africa. This partially explains why the CDC and WHO report that the majority of malaria reports and incidences (up to 95%) occur in Africa.
