Nursing Shortage
The Healthcare system needs significant developments for a populous country like the united states. Nursing care should be able to adequately meet the demand for patient care in the nursing units. Nursing care was low, especially in the last one or two decades, but has been considerably increased due to government investment to improve the sector. Despite making great improvements, nursing care and care demand have not yet balanced. This discussion focuses on the factors or events that lead to this shortage, resolution towards these events and how New York state has addressed this challenge.
Some events are currently leading to the nursing shortage and could eventually still affect in the future if not earlier worked on. First is the discrepancy between the aging population and the equivalent skilled young population. The ageing population is a concern that needs to be looked at. Currently, the United States has the highest population of people above the age of 65 years compared to any time in its history. The census department also predicts that by 2029, the country will be having the last baby boomer, which will eventually rise the older to about 73% of the general population (Snavely, 2016). The rapidly aging population poses quite a tricky scenario because there are no sufficient youths to replace the retiring workforce. The nurses are retiring at a higher rate than the replacement rate. Also, the high, increasing rate of the older population has led to high demand for care, which is a serious concern for now and the future.
