Clinical significance is the practical worth of an outcome; whether the outcome has a noticeable effect on the patient. In clinical settings, a clinically significant finding transpires when healthcare providers believe that the result can be applied as a guidebook in the provision of healthcare. This implies that a clinically significant result can enable a treatment plan to help a patient to return to a normal functional state.
Differences between clinical and statistical significance
A major difference between clinical and statistical significance is that the former is subjective, while the latter is based solely on facts. In essence, the clinical significance of a result is a subjective analysis of that result to reflect patient care. This implies that the clinical significance of a result is dependent on its implications on the health of a patient (Heavey, 2015). For instance, indicating that a drug lowered the heart rate of a patient by an average of one beat per minute cannot be deemed to be clinically significant because the change is unlikely to be of any importance to the patients and the healthcare providers.
