In 2016, the department of health and human services in the United States stated that approximately one in every five adolescents has a diagnosable mental health disorder. In addition, about a third of the adolescent population displays signs of depression. Mental health disorders usually affect the normal functioning of the brain. The incidence of mental health disorders is because of various causes and a consequence of complex interactions between the genes of an individual and their surroundings. The prevalence of such disorders is not a moral failing or a choice. The impact of mental health disorders is likely to be more than as indicated in statistics (Mental Health America, 2013). Prompt diagnosis together with early intervention, especially in the initial stages might have a significant and life-changing effect to an adolescent with mental health disorders.
Early intervention may result in an improved diagnosis, management, and prognosis. It may also help in allowing more timely and targeted medical appointment for specialist services.
