Diabetes Mellitus is caused by insulin deficiency in the body. The pancreas is no longer able to produce enough insulin to regulate the blood sugar levels. Insulin helps convert glucose into energy while excess sugars are converted to fats and stored within the body. Some of the long-term effects of Diabetes Mellitus is it damages large blood vessels of the heart, brain and legs. A condition known as macrovascular complications which are often fatal. It also damages small blood vessels with bigger body tissues such as eyes, kidneys, feet and nerves leading to a condition known as microvascular complications. Such complications lead to poor sight and kidney problems.
Taking diets with high sugar content especially processed sugars increase blood sugar levels rapidly. Insulin produced in the pancreas is unable to deal with the overwhelming amounts of sugar energy in the blood. Over time, the sugars affect insulin production and Diabetes Mellitus sets it. Taking healthy balanced food rich in fiber and low in cholesterol is a good way of managing the insulin producing cells in the pancreas and avoid developing the disease.
Healthy eating is a sure way of preventing Diabetes Mellitus. Well balanced meals are necessary in preventing the disease and other complications that come with Diabetes.
