Describe the causes and the long-term consequences of diabetes mellitus. How can diet influence the risk of developing diabetes? What can we do to reduce our risk of developing this disorder?
Diabetes Mellitus is caused by insulin deficiency in the body. The pancreas is no longer able to produce enough insulin to regulate the blood sugar levels. Insulin helps convert glucose into energy while excess sugars are converted to fats and stored within the body. Some of the long-term effects of Diabetes Mellitus is it damages large blood vessels of the heart, brain and legs. A condition known as macrovascular complications which are often fatal.
