Diabetes Care in California
Introduction

It will also describe the topic of diabetes and the target cultural population and summarize three related articles. Finally, the essay will address the appropriate approaches to educating the target population.
Diabetes Care in California In the Context of The African American Cultural Group
Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death in California and America. For instance, a 2021 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that over 34 million Americans have a chronic disease. This high prevalence rate is also reflected in California, where approximately 10.5% of the adult population in California (3,209,418 people) have been diagnosed with the disease. The 2021 report also shows that 33.4% of the adult population in the state (10,320,000 people) have abnormally high levels of blood glucose but are not yet high enough to classify as diabetes or what is known as prediabetes. Moreover, the report shows that while 272,814 people in California are diagnosed with the chronic disease (one of the highest numbers of new cases in the country), an additional 884,000 people are not yet aware they have diabetes, thereby exacerbating their health risk (American Diabetes Association, 2021). These statistics indicate that diabetes is a serious health burden to the state and heightens the need for health promotion and prevention.
Moreover, the rates of diagnosed diabetes in adults are higher among African Americans and Hispanics. For instance, 12.3 out of every 100 people in California with diabetes are African American, and 12.1 are Hispanic, compared to 8.4 for Whites and 8.5 for Asians (Slone, 2018). The African American cultural group is most affected by diabetes because of biological, economic, and cultural risk factors. African Americans are not only genetically predisposed to have the condition. However, they are also more likely to experience socioeconomic barriers that heighten the risk of the condition and prevent them from accessing healthcare resources critical to prevention and treatment. The project relates to the selected Healthy People 2030 goal of reducing the number of diabetes cases diagnosed yearly (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2023). The Healthy People 2030 aims to reduce the more than 30 million cases of chronic conditions in America by reducing diabetes prevalence, complications, and deaths. Moreover, Healthy People 2030 acknowledges that the disease disproportionally burdens some racial/ethnic minorities and that many people with the condition do not realize they have it.
The Healthy People 2030 will help reduce diabetes in California by supporting the project’s goal of reducing new diabetes cases among the African American cultural group, one of California's most affected populations. This project supports Healthy People 2030 by allowing nurses to play the role of facilitators in diabetes prevention. Nurses can be the catalysts for...
