While the mortality of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in both the US and the UK is declining, it remains one of the leading causes of death. The total annual deaths attributed to CVD in the US is 30.8% while in the UK, it stands at 28% (Giedrimiene & King, 2018). Both countries have done significantly well in reducing CVD mortality. From 1980 to 2013, the mortality of CVD in the UK declined by 68% (Bhatnagar, Wickramasinghe, Wilkins, & Townsend, 2016). In the US, the mortality declined by 57% from 1983 to 2013 (Kamal & Sawyer, 2017). The declines are attributed to reduced smoking rates, medical advances, and improvement in heart-attack response.
In the UK, the number of CVD admissions increased by more than 46,000 between 2011 and 2014; however, the increase was significantly more in men than in women (Bhatnagar, Wickramasinghe, Wilkins, & Townsend, 2016). There is no similar data for the US but according to a study by Akintoye et al. (2017), the rate of Heart Failure (HF) hospitalizations reduced by 3% on average between 2001 and 2014.
