Cultural Diversity in Healthcare and the 4C's of Culture

Essay Instructions:

Review the brief case study below (adopted from Understanding Cultural Diversity in Healthcare, 2019):

Amiya Nidhi was a young woman in her twenties who had recently immigrated to the United States from India. She was in the hospital to give birth. Her support person was her sister, Marala. Marala kept telling her to get an epidural, but Amiya said that even though she would like one, she could not get one; her husband would not allow it. Cindy, her nurse, overheard the conversation. Having learned that husbands are the authority figure in the traditional Indian household, she went to speak with Mr. Nidhi. She explained why an epidural would be advisable. She said that he seemed pleased that she came to him about it. He said he would think about it, and let her know.

Write a 2- to 3-page paper (page count does not include title or reference pages) that addresses the following:

Assignment Expectations

Assessment and Grading: Your paper will be assessed based on the performance assessment rubric. You can view it under Assessments at the top of the page. Review it before you begin working on the assignment. Your work should also follow these Assignment Expectations.

File format: Your work should be prepared using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, or Excel depending upon the assignment instructions. For assignments requiring video or voice recordings, use media formats that are supported by MyTLC Courses as noted in our page.

In-text citations and references: Be sure that all information and ideas in your papers are supported by in-text citations and corresponding references at the end of the paper.

Scholarly sources: Online sources must be limited to credible professional and scholarly publications such as peer-reviewed journal articles, e-books, or specific webpages on websites from a university, government, or nonprofit organization (these have extensions .edu, .gov, or .org). Presenting consumer sources such as e-magazines, newspapers, Wikipedia, WebMD, or other commercial websites (these have extensions .com) as references is not appropriate.

Scholarly writing: Use an academic paper format, not an essay based on your opinions or experience. Avoid using the first person in writing. Synthesize what you learned from the sources you read; write papers in your own words; and cite sources within the text, as well as include a properly formatted reference list.

Use of your own words: Your paper should be written in your own words to enable faculty to assess your level of understanding. Avoid the use of direct quotes. Only use direct quotes when preserving the exact words of an author is necessary. In the rare instance that directly quoted material is used, it must be properly cited (with quotation marks and page numbers in the in-text citation); quotes should not exceed 5-10% of the total paper content.

Cultural Perspective
The issue from the cultural perspective is the dominance and autonomy of men as the decision-makers within the family. The Indian traditional society exhibits the dynamic aspect that places men at the centre of making decisions within the family. It is an elegant issue within the environment as it could expose other family members' lives to danger and health threats. For instance, looking at the stipulated case study, Amiya Nidhi has been subjected to a situation that places her at risk of experiencing a high level of pain. Despite the advice from her sister based on the condition that she is about to face, Amiya denies and stipulates that the decision has to come from her husband (Dickerson et al., 2020). It is an autonomous traditional society that practices outdated cultural practices that are essential for the aspect of Culture but pose a threat to the safety of individuals. The case study portrays that woman in the Indian traditional society exhibits a dynamic element of diverse limitation on the freedom of choosing for themselves. Men make decisions for the women within the designated community. It implies that society has been dominated by masculine traits and shunts the position of women.
4-C’s of Culture
The 4-C's of Culture depicted in the case study entail consumer disparities, consumption practices, complexity in research, and communication advice for the practitioners. Based on consumer differences, the stipulated cultural practice depicted is the aspect of decision-making. The Indian artistic practice technique places men at the centre of crucial decision-making within the family. On the other hand, in American Culture, the designated family moved places, men and women, on an equal decision-making scale. There are dynamic differences in the techniques adopted in the two cultures. The dynamics of the people within the two cultures vary significantly on the position of women within the society.
The consumer practice depicted in the case study is the epidural application aimed at minimizing pain in Amiya. The delivery method within the designated case study is similar as both have been subjected to hospital delivery services. The complexity of research arises based on the stipulated conduct adopted by the nurse (Dai et al., 2022). It is exhibited on the grounds of the nurse talking directly to the husband on the decision to apply the epidural needle. Communication and advice for the practitioners have been depicted in the consolation that the nurse offered to Amiya and her sister regarding the practice of consoling her husband. It is because the designated method affects her more than the husband, an essential technique c...
