In their research study, Oh and Gastmans (2015) did not involve human subjects since the study was a literature review of the available literature on moral distress that nurses experience. Since there were no participants, but just an appraisal of articles, the need for the protection of human rights was not applicable to this study. Regarding the research design, Oh and Gastmans (2015) utilized the most rigorous possible research, given the study’s purpose. They specifically utilized a quantitative methodological review that used a narrative review design in providing overviews of the moral distress that nursing staff's experience. The investigators adopted the research methodology as described by the Centre for Reviews and Discrimination (CRD) for carrying out literature reviews. This allowed Oh and Gastmans (2015) to include research studies that used a quantitative method validly. No appropriate comparisons were made to enhance the interpretability of the findings. Also, the research design did not effectively minimize biases and threats to the study’s external and internal validity. This is largely because attrition was not minimized and blinding was not used.
About the population and sample, the articles that were appraised and synthesized have been identified and clearly described. Moreover, to enhance the representativeness of the sample, the researchers used the best possible sampling design. This entailed selecting nineteen studies that were published between the year 1984 and 2011. The sample size of 19 articles was adequate considering the type of study and the purpose. Concerning data collection and measurement, Oh and Gastmans (2015) collected data from recognized electronic databases. An extensive search was carried out in various databases including Cochrane, CINAHL, Embase, Medline, and PsycINFO. The keywords used in the search have been described adequately.
