Ineffectiveness of conscience and religious freedom Since the 1970s, the conscience provisions have highlighted that the medical practitioners for not have to provide medical procedures if they are contrary to their religious beliefs or moral convictions. However, recently the Trump administration support for the creation of conscience and religious freedom division ignores that there may be increased in discrimination of patients under the guise of protecting religious freedom. The conscience and religious freedom is closely linked to the idea of exercising their religious beliefs without interference from anyone (Muñoz, 2016). The notion that the division will help protect against the victims of illegal discrimination forced to go against their moral and religious convictions is based on the belief that religious people are widely discriminated against. This is the farthest from the truth as earliest provisions already protect them, both the division and recent adopted provisions are ineffective .
Rationale for position The existing laws are already enforced and creating a division to address the issue of clinicians with religious objections is a political move that ignores other stakeholders, especially, the patients most likely to be affected. For instance, there is greater risk of patients facing difficulties to access health care patients if the application of the laws is over vigorous. Furthermore, there is already Religious Freedom Day, which further highlights the guarantee for religious freedom is already strong.
