Deep vein thrombosis refers to a medical condition occasioned by the formation of a blood clot in one or more of the body’s deep veins (Stone et al., 2016). This condition mainly affects the deep veins of the legs. The condition is usually accompanied by swelling or pain in the affected area, although it may also manifest without any symptoms. Evidence has revealed that deep vein thrombosis mainly occurs when the affected person has not moved for a relatively long time. Further, it has been observed that this condition may have severe effects if not managed in good time. As McCance & Huether (2019) observes, when the pathophysiology of one system is affected, other systems are inevitably affected.
Deep vein thrombosis greatly affects the working of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Immediate effects are felt by the cardiovascular system. When a deep vein of the leg or lower extremities experiences a blood clot, blood flow is obstructed (Stubbs et al., 2018).
