An organ system refers to several organs working in tandem to create a state of balance within the body or homeostasis. The human body has 11 organ systems critical to managing all the primary body functions and ensuring the person's survival: these systems are interdependent, and when one is impaired, the rest are affected. These organ systems are the respiratory system, muscular system, digestive system, integumentary system, lymphatic system, skeletal system, cardiovascular system, urinary system, reproductive system, nervous system, and endocrine system. The cardiovascular system comprises the heart, blood vessels, and blood itself. Its primary function is to carry oxygen and nutrients to all parts of the body and transport carbon dioxide and other waste products from body cells. This circulatory system works within a particular pressure range, where too high or too low blood pressure affects the ability of the organ system to perform optimally.
The lymphatic system comprises lymph vessels, lymph ducts, lymph nodes, and lymph glands. Its function assists in immunity, digestion, blood pressure regulation, digestion, and drainage of excess proteins, fluid, bacteria, and fats. The gastrointestinal system includes all organs transporting food from the mouth to the anus, including the esophagus, stomach, and intestines. Its function is to digest and absorb nutrients and eliminate all waste not utilized by the body. The integumentary system includes the nails, sweat glands, nerves, and hair follicles.
